JOHN F. LARCHET.
The retirement of Dr. Larchet will be regretted by countless lovers of the drama who have in the past twenty-seven years looked upon him as a constant contributor to the success of the Irish National Theatre. It was due to his artistry that the musical interludes have become one of the features of the Abbey Theatre. Few musicians have deserved so well of their country as John F. Larchet. He has constantly striven to raise the standards of music in this country whether in the school or in the University. He has done much to encourage composition based on Irish folk music. Many of his songs such as “Padraic the Fiddler” and “An Ardglass Boat-song” are true evocations of the spirit of Ireland. He has also by musical settings such as we shall hear to.night[sic], pointed out a path for Irish modern composers to follow. It is only by adapting the Irish music idiom to modern harmonic development that the music of this country will become one of the great essentials of our national culture.
