The action takes place on the day of the death of Raftery, the blind poet and fiddler who was beloved for his songs and feared for his power of satire throughout Co. Galway. A young couple who are very poor come back to their bare cabin after their marriage to have one meal together Before they separate to go out to service again. A blind fiddler, who has the featuers and gifts of Rafterty, comes in and obtains for them presents them in kind and money which enable them to stay together.
